Level 1 British Sign Language (BSL)

The Signature Accredited Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL) is a qualification designed to teach learners to communicate with deaf people on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. The learners will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of British Sign Language (BSL).

To achieve the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL), learners must pass all 3 units:

• BSL 101 - Introduction to BSL - Meeting people, Using numbers, Weather, Transport & Directions (5 minute assessment)
• BSL 102 - Conversational BSL - Describing people, animals & objects, Using numbers, Interests & activities, Food & drink (4-5 minute assessment)
• BSL 103 - Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life - Getting around, Sharing information, Weather & Using numbers (4-5 minute assessment)

The Level 1 Award is suitable for those who:

• want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with deaf people
• want to learn new language skills as part of a programme of study
• want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment
• are studying for personal development
• are parents, family, friends, or colleagues of deaf people

The course will be held every Wednesday with Sophia Franklin at Talking Hands Studio, Hassocks for 30 weeks starting September 2024 at 6:30pm-8:30pm.

• 6th, 1th & 27th February (20th half term)
• 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th March
• 17th & 24th April (3rd & 10th Easter)
• 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd May (29th half term)

Assessments dates

• 5th June - BSL 101 assessment 
• 12th June - BSL 102 assessment
• 19th June - BSL 103 assessment

Course fee

£485 + service fee

Monthly payment option:

£85 deposit

£50 monthly instalments x 8

Those who have deaf children can apply for funding, please go to Birkdale Trust or Ovingdean Hall Trust.
